RAID Recovery Online Environment

The following figures describe the optimal Online Recovery Environment set up.

A recovery computer connected through the network to the internet:

A recovery computer with (externally / internally) connected RAID hard drives and a Target drive:

Online RAID recovery requires:

  • An operational Windows XP/Vista system with an Administrator account, with all RAID hard disks connected to a standard (non-RAID) disk controller. An additional target drive is required for the recovered data.

  • A broadband internet connection to the system.

Environment Setup

System – First, you must connect all RAID hard disks to an operational Windows XP/Vista system. Make sure you have an administrative account on that system. Also connect an empty target drive which will be used for the recovered data.

Boot – Make sure you do not run any repair/recovery tool on this system. These tools may damage your data even further. When you boot the recovery system, Windows may prompt you to run the chkdsk utility to repair the file system. Skip this process and all other repair/recovery procedures suggested by the system.

Connection - Setting up a secure channel over the internet with the assistance of our support system.

Important notice

  • All hard disks should be connected directly to the recovery system using a standard disk controller (non-RAID SCSI / SATA / IDE) or as external drives (USB/ iSCSI / eSATA /...)

  • An online recovery is feasible only if the hard disks are functioning. If one of the hard disks makes a suspicious noise, disconnect it and start the system without it. If more than one hard disk is physically damaged, offline data recovery in our labs is probably the best option.
